Formal Gowns in Extended Sizes: What to Wear to a Gala, Black Tie, or Ball

Formal dressing in extended sizes has a specific problem. The gowns with real structure (boning, corset backs, trains) are usually the ones that stop at a size 16. We think structure matters more as sizes go up, not less. That's why our formal styles keep the boned bodice and the corset back all the way through the size run.

Black tie, gala, ball: what's the difference?

  • Black tie: a floor-length gown. Evening fabrics, deeper colors, minimal print.
  • Gala: usually black tie with more room for color and statement details.
  • Ball, winter formal, or quinceañera: full skirts, embellishment, drama. This is the event to go big.
  • Black tie optional: a gown or an elevated midi both work.

Gowns with structure

  • Stella Dress ($268, sizes 00 to 34). A boned bodice, a corset and zipper back, and gold constellation embroidery on navy. The sheer long sleeves make it a strong winter pick.
  • Mariposa Dress ($278, sizes 00 to 34). Butterfly appliqués and lace on an A-line gown with a boned bodice and corset back. Made for balls and quinceañeras.
  • Arabella Dress ($338, sizes 00 to 34). A square neckline, a structured bodice lining, a skirt train, and a slit. The most black tie of the group.

Gowns with color

  • Cordelia Dress ($258, sizes XXS to 6X). Lavender, fully lined, with puff sleeves. Consider sizing down.
  • Starry Night Dress ($228, sizes XXS to 6X). The Van Gogh print gives people something to talk about at the table.
  • Promise Dress ($228, sizes XXS to 6X). Pink floral appliqués with sheer flutter sleeves. It runs large, so size down.

Gowns for winter formals

  • Mary Dress ($168, sizes XXS to 6X). Red velvet with a pearl-trimmed square neckline and shoulder bows.
  • Everbloom Dress ($248, sizes 00 to 34). Teal with shimmer and a boned waist. Size up.

Fit tips for structured gowns

A boned bodice fits closer than a soft one, so check your bust and waist against the chart. If you fall between two sizes, size up. A corset back gives you a couple of inches to work with. A zipper-only back does not. Always read the fit note on the product page. We add one when a style runs small or large. The size guide has the full chart.

Common questions

Can I wear a midi to black tie?

Only if the invitation says black tie optional. For true black tie, go floor length.

What colors work for a gala?

Jewel tones (navy, emerald, teal, deep red) read as formal in every season. Pastels are lovely at spring galas.

Are extended sizes priced higher?

No. Every size is the same price.
